Begonia brevirimosa is one of the most striking foliage begonias in cultivation. Native to Papua New Guinea, it is prized for its electric pink variegation that appears painted across dark olive-green leaves. Under ideal conditions it becomes a large, upright cane begonia that can reach 3–5 feet (0.9–1.5 m) indoors over several years.
Light
- Bright, indirect light.
- Avoid harsh afternoon sun, which can scorch the pink portions.
- An east window or several feet back from a south or west window is ideal.
- Under grow lights:
- PPFD: 100–200
- 12–14 hours/day
Temperature
- Ideal: 65–80°F (18–27°C)
- Avoid temperatures below 60°F (16°C).
- Keep away from cold drafts and air conditioning vents.
Humidity
This species thrives in higher humidity.
- Ideal: 65–85%
- It adapts to around 50–60%, but growth slows and leaf edges may crisp.
- Excellent candidate for:
- Greenhouses
- Indoor cabinets
- Large terrariums while young
Unlike many delicate begonias, it appreciates airflow along with humidity.
Watering
Keep the substrate evenly moist—not wet.
Water when:
- Top ½–1 inch begins to dry.
- The pot feels noticeably lighter.
Avoid:
- Standing water
- Completely drying out
- Water sitting on leaves overnight
